Mayor Rosamilia makes two announcements pertaining to the Alamo

TROY, NY – Troy Mayor Lou Rosamilia has made two announcements pertaining to the City’s Alamo site. In addition to the City of Troy opening the Alamo for bulk refuse disposal for an extra day for the months of September, October and November (weather permitting), the City will be hosting its annual Hazardous Waste Day on September 27.

“The Alamo provides Troy residents with a convenient, safe outlet to get rid of items that should not or cannot be disposed of through typical garbage pickup,” said Mayor Rosamilia. “Opening the Alamo for an extra day for the next few months and hosting the Hazardous Waste Day makes life easier and less expensive for our citizens.”

The Alamo, typically open on the third Saturday of each month, will also now be open on the first Saturday of the autumn months. During these days, Troy residents will be able to discard up to one pick-up truck’s worth of furniture, appliances, carpets, mattresses and tires. Electronics, chemicals, paint and household garbage are not accepted.

The Alamo is open from 7:30 until noon on these days. Troy residents must bring photo identification.

The City’s annual Hazardous Waste Day will be held on September 27. In order to participate in the event, residents will be required to pick up a Household Hazardous Waste Day coupon at City Hall, located at 433 River Street. Coupons are available to be picked up in the Deputy Mayor’s Office. Only 200 coupons will be issued on a first-come, first served basis.

Coupons will be provided to individuals who present an acceptable form of identification, which include: driver’s license, Troy resident ID card, government-issued identification that includes an address, tax/recycling/utility bills, or cancelled rent check showing a Troy address. A driver’s license showing a P.O. Box address will not be accepted as proof of City residence.

The event will serve as an opportunity for residents to dispose of items such as: aerosols, automotive fluids, asbestos insulation (must be damp and double bagged), caustic/acidic cleaners, chemistry sets, corrosive liquids, pesticides, oil/latex paint, paint thinners, poisons, anti-freeze, motor oil, propane cylinders, agricultural pesticides, DDT fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, PCBs, resins/adhesives, fuels, oxidizer, household cleaners and polishes.

Items NOT acceptable include pharmaceuticals, explosives, household garbage, recyclables (plastics, metals, glass, paper products, cardboard, etc.), bulk refuse (furniture, carpet, mattresses, toys, appliances, etc.), small propane tanks (under 20 lb.), electronics, household / vehicle batteries, fluorescent lighting (tubes) and compact florescent bulbs will not be accepted at the hazardous waste event.

The Alamo is directly across the street from the Rensselaer County Jail near the intersection of Main Street and East Industrial Parkway in South Troy.

The free services are available only to Troy residents. They are not designed to accept materials from businesses or commercial properties.
