Albany County in Top 10 of State Counties for Funds Returned To Local Government For Tax Crimes

District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that the Financial Crimes Unit has secured $334,045 in funds returned through Crimes Against Revenue Programs in the 2013-2014 fiscal year.  This amount has Albany County ranked 4th for counties outside of New York City, and 8th overall in New York State for funds returned.

“I am proud to say that the Financial Crimes Unit has done an excellent job this past year in securing $334,045 that had been taken from honest, hardworking taxpayers. Crimes against revenue programs such as tax crimes, social services fraud, labor law fraud and workers compensation fraud, make it harder for honest people to receive benefits. We will continue to identify these criminals and we will stringently prosecute them to the best of our ability. This office has no tolerance for those people who think they can take benefits away from the honest and hardworking people of Albany County,” commented DA David Soares.

The Albany County District Attorney’s Office works diligently to investigate and prosecute crimes falling under New York State’s Crimes Against Revenue Program (CARP). These crimes include tax fraud, social services fraud, labor law fraud and workers compensation fraud.

Since the inception of the Crimes Against Revenue Program, Assistant District Attorneys from the Financial Crimes have recovered $1,994,537 from defendants who stole from the taxpayers and returned those funds to the revenue accounts of Albany County and New York State.
