Catholic Charities Play at the Chapel + Cultural Center in Troy

On Saturday, Sept. 20, Catholic Charities’ Commission on Peace and Justice will sponsor “Rooted in Love: the Life and Martyrdom of Dorothy Stang, SND deNamur.”

This one-woman play is about Sr. Dorothy Stang, a 74-year-old American nun who was murdered in Brazil for her efforts to protect the rainforest and its people from disastrous and often illegal exploitation by logging firms and ranchers.

The play will be presented at 7 p.m. at the Chapel + Cultural Center, 2125 Burdett Avenue in Troy. Tickets are $15 ($10 for students and seniors). They may be purchased on-line athttp://www.ccrcda.org/peacejustice.htm or by calling 453-6654.

She is portrayed by Sister Nancy Murray, O.P., sister of comedian Bill Murray and an accomplished actor in her own right.

Since her death, Sister Dorothy was formally recognized by the Vatican as a modern day martyr and has been widely honored for her life and work by the United States Congress and by a number of colleges and universities across the United States. She was posthumously awarded the 2008 United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights.
